Karen Holder

I’m Karen, a stay-at-home mom of two girls, one 16 and the other 18. While I know it’s unusual for a mom to still be out of the work force with kids these ages (especially when the money would really come in handy!), I think it’s been the right choice for our family. It’s nice to be available to the teens during the day and to be able to keep an eye on things during those afternoon hours. (Can you hear my girls gagging and groaning while they’re reading that?!) I am a constant embarrassment to my kids in so many ways…the things I wear, say, do, like. I am so skilled at embarrassing them that I don’t even have to try hard at it. I’m hoping someday they’ll look back and think of me as fun and spunky and creative rather than just horribly strange. I love all things creative and crafty, spicy food, diet soda (possibly love to the point of addiction?), fresh paint, and casual clothes. I hate doing laundry, attending meetings, and getting dressed up. (If I’m wearing heels and a dress, there’s probably either a wedding or a funeral!) If you’re looking for someone who’s an expert parent who has all the right answers, you might want to read someone else’s posts. But if you’re looking for someone who is out there struggling every day to get it right, I’m your girl.

Wal-Mart Fun

My teen and his friends love going into Wal-Mart for playtime.  Yes, I said playtime! My son and his friends act like total goof balls in the aisles of the Wal-Mart.  They bee-line straight to the back where the toy section is located.  They like to venture into the toy section to play with the toys and act like three year olds.  I have to warn my son not to go back into the toy section and act like a total fool.  Yes, my teen likes to relive some of his toddler moments.  One day we went into wal-mart and my son and his friend picked up some light sabers and started to battle each other in the middle of …

Silver Linings

Misery loves company? I think Satan revels in our misery. What on earth is worse than feeling alone and without hope? Misery can manifest in countless combinations and when it comes a knockin, you better hope you’re not “home alone”. I see “family” as Satan’s chief rival and I am proud of mine. When the chips are down, God always shows up, many times taking the form of our family bonds.Every time I visited my brother during his stay in the hospital he had a lot of company. His wife Patty and their daughters Jordan and Carly were there for the entirety, fighting his misery with …

Journey, Adventure or Road Trip

Road trips are the best.  My daughter and I have been traveling all weekend and we had the best time.  I have always believed that getting “there” is half the fun.  Sometimes the journey there is the most enjoyable and memorable part of the trip.  We laugh, and talk, and sing and then she sleeps.  After her little nap, she wakes up and we laugh, and talk, and sing some more.  It’s such a special time together when we can really have deep, uninterrupted conversations.

I know my time with her on these long extended trips will soon be over so I try to relish every moment of our …

Mom’s Weekend Away

About once a year I get a chance to get away for a weekend with my friends.  And I look forward to it all year long.  On Friday morning, we loaded a couple of vehicles with an unreasonable amount of luggage and crafting supplies and headed south to Myrtle Beach.

I have to admit that I was far less productive this year than any other.  I didn’t really make much of anything.  In years past, I made scrapbooks and other crafty stuff from sunup to sundown every day.  This year I had a bad cold, so I did a lot of goofing around and napping and just plain relaxing.  I didn’t …

Cooking Time

From the batch of brownies Max made.

Some time ago, I wrote about my desire to teach Max some cooking skills.  There really hasn’t been much progress in that area, but one weekend morning as Max was rummaging around in the cabinets looking for a snack, I thought it was a good time to re-visit the idea.

I handed him a card with a recipe for brownies on it and we got started.  We always seem to have the ingredients for brownies on hand (except for that day; we were out of vanilla).  But we had everything else, so we got started.  It …

A Frightening Feeling

It’s hard to believe in two more years my son will be considered an adult.  It is a scary notion, which I just can not believe.  It’s hard enough when I go a long period without seeing my son, but the thought of my teen transitioning into adulthood is absolutely frightening to me.   It is not a bad scary, but an “Oh My Goodness” my son is no longer the little baby, the terrible toddler, the curious school age student, or the rambunctious tween.  He is now this transformed being of “Man”.

Are these feelings normal?

He is taking on adult like qualities.  …

O’ Brother Who Art Thou?

There are all kinds of examples;  good, bad and all the rest in between. Most families have members in the older crowd that are giving the younger crowd everything they can digest in all departments. My family is certainly no different, beginning with me where my own kids are involved. When you take the “entire tribe” into consideration, my family probably provides as diverse a concoction of “examples” as you’ll find anywhere on earth. I am referring here to individuals that leave no room for doubt regarding who they are.I believe this to be truly valuable when it comes to the lessons my kids learn from their family elders. …

Shocking News About Prescription Drug Abuse

This is not totally “new” news because most of us have been aware through the media, both locally and nationally, that over the last 3-4 years of the increasing presence of prescription drug use and abuse in our society. Most unfortunate is that the problem has infiltrated and is on the rise amongst our youth – meaning our teenagers.

Yes, potentially yours and mine – no one is immune, as some folks may believe. One of the core issues has to do with the massive increase in availability and relative ease of access since society in general is heavily dosed! That is, we have become heavily dependent on having “something” prescribed for …

One Lazy Teen

Put your lazy teen to work!

As I mentioned in a previous post, I do feel having eight days off from school is a bit too much for mindless activity.  How many of you have teens that like to sleep in until eleven a.m.?  My teen loves to sleep in and stay up until wee hours in the night or shall say in the morning.

I decided to make my son productive over the next eight days.  He has his normal chores which get done on a weekly basis.  However, he now has a few more things to add on his list of “things to get done.”For one …

Exam Week = Halfway Point

It’s exam week.  That means we are officially halfway through the school year.  Half down, half to go.  I know Katie is not alone in feeling some relief at reaching this point.  But I’m sure she’s also not alone in feeling a little nervous about what to expect from the second half of her junior year.  And here I am, feeling those things right along with her.

There have been some ups and downs during this first half of the school year.  Thankfully, her grades have been pretty good.  She’s managed to have enough success that she’s exempt from exams, which will make this an easy week for her.  And she’s …
